Everyone wants glossy, healthy hair like Blake Lively's, but most of us don't have a celebrity hairstylist and million-dollar budget to keep our tresses perfect.

Fortunately, there are more affordable ways to keep your hair looking red-carpet ready with the right products and a little bit of TLC.

Just like most of us have a daily skincare routine, developing a hair routine can promote healthier, shinier hair that will have you looking and feeling amazing.

Follow the five steps below to take the first step on your journey to perfect hair.

Who wouldn't want long healthy locks like this?

One of the best ways to hydrate your hair is to lock in moisture with a luscious leave-in treatment. “Moisture masks and light oils can be amazing. Dryness is the number one issue with hair, either from excessive styling and using tools with really high heat settings or dryness from over-colouring and especially from naturally curly hair, which can literally eat up moisture,” explains Michael.

Silky materials feel luxurious and have many benefits for skin and hair, including keeping strands super smooth. “My grandmother would sleep in a silk scarf when her hair was set in curls to reduce friction and frizz,” says Michael. “Now, we know how much silk pillowcases not only can help skin, but especially keep hair smoother with less friction; great if you want to extend the life of a blow dry, waves or perfectly smooth hair.”

Washing hair too often can cause damage and increase oiliness. VS Sassoon national brand ambassador Michael Brown generally recommends every two to three days. Dry shampoos are great between washes and can help styled locks last longer. “Dry shampoo helps with extra volume, but if hair is too clean it often is limp and won’t hold many styles.”

With more sulphate-free formulas from our favourite brands on the market, consider this your sign to try them. “Sulphates can over-clean hair, so you run the risk of excess dryness within your hair, which isn’t the best for sensitive scalps or coloured hair,” Michael warns. “It’s also known to cause frizz, so going sulphate-free can benefit everyone.” Try one of these free-from formulas to keep your hair silky smooth.

Soft, fluffy and healthy - Blake has the hair of our dreams.

From blow-drying to styling, heat plays a big part in our hair routines. “Higher heat can mean faster, stronger results for straightening or adding waves, but it can also damage your hair,” Michael says. “Always adjust heat to a setting that isn’t drying your hair. Your hair will look more shiny.”  The next time you pick up a tool, try playing around with the cooler temperature settings. Some handy tools have built-in temperature controls that only reach the optimal temperature for styling, so it’s a much safer option.
